Team Chaplain by Craigie Harper
Before making this painting, Craigie had been reading about team chaplains and their roles within football clubs, where they invariably operate on the periphery. He ended up including a chaplain on the far end of a defensive wall; more involved in the match than he should be, but still slightly detached from the players. It turns out that standing in quiet reverence is pretty much the same gesture as protecting yourself while waiting for a free kick to be taken.
Ever been to Kilmarning? No, nor has anyone else. That's because it's not a real place, but a wee rural town invented by Craigie Harper. The Scottish artist documents the everyday goings-on in Kilmarning and its perennially underachieving football team, Kilmarning United. Craigie’s paintings are partly autobiographical, partly fictitious; the line between the two is blurred but they've usually got a good story behind them.
