Craigie was thinking back to his previous public-facing jobs, such as the time he worked in a bookshop. For him, it was stressful enough having to work the till as he fumbled for books and carrier bags, a queue of disgruntled shoppers steadily building as he struggled to come up with a single recommendation for a present for someone's 12-year-old niece. Craigie imagined the public mercilessly taunting him with this chant, despite his best efforts to do a good job.
Ever been to Kilmarning? No, nor has anyone else. That's because it's not a real place, but a wee rural town invented by Craigie Harper. The Scottish artist documents the everyday goings-on in Kilmarning and its perennially underachieving football team, Kilmarning United. Craigie’s paintings are partly autobiographical, partly fictitious; the line between the two is blurred but they've usually got a good story behind them.
